Why digital radiography?

  • Max - Mini - Max

In medicine, including dentistry, the Max-Mini-Max rule has been gaining more and more popularity. Maximum of diagnostics, minimum of intervention and maximum of benefits. In dentistry, diagnostic possibilities have been improved thanks to the X-ray examination. Dental pantomography is considered to be a preliminary test during the first contact with a patient. A pantomographic picture gives a flat image of spatial structures (2D), which is why, today it cannot be regarded as a detailed examination but rather a general one. Additionally, pantomographic pictures are deformed up to 30% in the vertical dimension and up to 60% in the horizontal dimension, which may lead to further misinterpretation.

  • THE HIGHEST PRECISION

In the HELIOS-TOMOGRAFIA Radiological Laboratory we use the most accurate method of diagnostic imaging: CBCT - Cone Beam Computed Tomography. We use the newest version of the Care Steam 9300 camera produced in 2016. In comparison to the planar computed tomography, which is widely used in hospital treatment, the cone beam computed tomography significantly shortens the time of testing and reduces the dose of ionizing radiation (over 10 times) required to carry out the test.

  • SECURITY

The radiation dose received by a patient during a single test using the Care stream 9300 camera (Version III, 2016):

    • pantomographic test - about 5 µSv
    • cone beam tomography, a small image - about 40 µSv
    • computed tomography of the head using a hospital camera- about 1000 µSv.

Furthermore, the radiation dose during digital radiography decreased in comparison to the analog radiography. A dental radiographic image requires the adoption of the radiation dose 10 times less than in the case of using a traditional dental film roll. To compare, a plane trip from London to New York leads to absorbing of approximately 100 µSv.

FOR PATIENTS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WHAT IS A PANORAMIC RADIOGRAPH?

Panoramic radiograph, or pantomogram, is a panoramic X-ray of the upper and lower jaw. In today's dentistry pantomogram is considered a review image which is the basis for medical diagnosis. After physical examination, patient interview and evaluating the pantomogram doctor may decide to refer the patient for further tests, for example tomography.
Pantomogram shows the lower part of the facial skeleton, along with the teeth and the surrounding bone tissue. It allows for detection of a variety of lesions and abnormalities such as impacted teeth, changes around the apex, tooth decay, and also shows previously treated root canals. Pantomogram cannot be used for assessment of soft tissue.
Every patient visiting a dentist should have a panoramic X-ray with them. It is considered necessary during the first appointment. It provides a good basis for further diagnosis and treatment plan. It is also a form of surety for the patient because it shows their dental condition before starting the treatment.

  • HOW DOES THE PROCEDURE WORK?

The procedure is completely painless and it takes no more than twenty seconds. The patient must remove all jewellery from their head and neck, put on a special protective apron, stand in a place indicated by the operator and assume a certain position. During the procedure, while the camera head rotates around the patient’s head, the patient should stand still.

  • IS PANORAMIC X-RAY SAFE?

Performing the procedure is safe and painless. Kodak Carestream technology guarantees the highest standard while ensuring the minimum dose of radiation, which is less than the dose of standard tooth X-ray.

  • ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS?

The main contraindication is pregnancy, especially the first trimester. Developing foetus is particularly sensitive to the adverse effects of ionizing radiation. If there is a suspicion of pregnancy, the patient must inform the operator prior to the procedure.

RADIOVISIOGRAPHY (DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY)

SAFE METHOD

Digital Radiography (DR) is a method of digital imaging. It was introduced in dentistry in 1987. X-ray image appears on the computer screen almost immediately after exposure to X-rays.
With indirect systems the images are recorded by phosphor plate which records latent images to be read by the scanner, and then transmitted onto the computer screen.

The phraseology of the word radiovisiography perfectly captures all stages of the procedure, to the final one: obtaining the image displayed on the screen. The greatest advantage of the process is dividing it into three different sub-units and allowing so-called post-processing, i.e. adjusting the contrast, brightness or using the so-called pseudocolour instead of greyscale.

  • radio - producing X-ray radiation,
  • visio – recording images,
  • graphy - displaying the image on the screen.

This method does not require doses of radiation found in conventional radiography - exposure time has been reduced to 0.02 s (reduced 10-50 times). The radiation dose for Carestream 2200 camera and Carestream 7600 scanner compared to traditional imaging has been reduced tenfold.

FOR DOCTORS

GENERAL INFORMATION

IMPORTANT: Patients with a referral to an X-ray procedure at HELIOS-TOMOGRAFIA Radiology Lab will not be consulted by our doctors without a written referral for a consultation.

Radiographic images, pantomograms and CBCT scans are stored on CDs. CT scans (computer tomography) are recorded only in Carestream program. Radiographic and panoramic images are saved as jpg files and in Carestream. This program allows recording and viewing the scans in higher resolution and using system tools which allow taking full advantage of the program’s capabilities. All scans recorded on CDs are accompanied by a basic browser which allows opening the disc on any computer. However, in order to gain access to the full extended version of Carestream and to be able to use all the program tools, a full extended version of the browser needs to be installed on the computer. If you are interested in the full version, we can install it on your laptop or visit your office and install Carestream on your desktop computer.

We can provide free training on Carestream for all interested doctors. In order to arrange training date, please call: 0048 609 70 70 73.

We are open to permanent partnerships with doctors. We offer attractive pricing for both patients and cooperating doctors.
